Lewis
& Clark Trail - Take the Grafton Ferry
Detour
Here is a
great way to experience
the Lewis & Clark Trail and other historic
attractions in the Riverbend area. Start
at the original "Point of Departure",
the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site at
Camp River Dubois on IL Route 3 in Hartford,
Illinois. Take Route 3 north to 143
north/northwest and visit the National Great
Rivers Museum at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam
#26. Continue to Alton and soak up some
history at the Civil War Prison, Lincoln
Douglas Square, and the Elijah Lovejoy and
Robert Wadlow monuments. Take the
magnificent Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic
Route (IL Route 100) from Alton to Grafton;
don't miss the legendary Piasa Bird just outside
Alton. The quaint village of Elsah, with
it's beautiful 19th century
architecture, is right off the byway, nestled in
the awesome limestone bluffs between Alton and
Grafton. At Grafton visit the area where
pre-Corps of Discovery explorers Marquette and
Joliet discovered the mouth of the Illinois
River. Then take a scenic ride on the
Grafton Ferry across the confluence of the
Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, and pick up the
the "official" Lewis & Clark Trail
at St. Charles, Missouri. See our Local
Links page for more Lewis
& Clark information.
